Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. Opinion Poll: What do you think of Boman Irani´s acting in "Well Done Abba"

Shyam Benegal is a legend. And with movies like Ankur, Manthan, Sardari Begum, Zubeidaa, and the more recent rural comedy Welcome to Sajjanpur, one can obviously see how! He has become the master of what Bollywood Buffs and the elites have started calling ‘middle cinema’, which is basically a perfect blend of art-house and commercial elements to entertain as well as enlighten people. So naturally, I got the tickets for the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) screening with some expectations from the director. Were the expectations fulfilled? Let’s find out…

The story goes something like this. Armaan Ali (Boman Irani) comes back after a mysterious self-extended three-month break, and his boss asks him to explain himself. Thus starts a colorful and exciting journey involving his twin brother (Boman Irani), the brother’s wife, his daughter’s (Minissha Lamba) marriage, and the hilariously realistic world of corrupt politics, which takes him on an endlessly long maze that he never knows if he can get out of. More about the story will divulge too much, so let’s stop right here!

The best part of this film is that, like Welcome to Sajjanpur, being a comedy, it doesn’t rot into the sickening over-the-top set of jokes. It uses realistic situations to make us laugh. The hilarity of the whole situation lies in the stark reality of the life around Armaan Ali, and not only do we laugh at his naïve attitude, we also think about the people and our rights. The film is not just an entertainer, but leaves a message in its own subtle way, which is an excellent way to portray something inspirational and educational to the mainstream audience.

Shyam Benegal has been able to achieve all this not through any small preachy gimmicks, but through a solid script that is more of an irony on life than some slapstick situations and a preachy end. A well written story converted into a well-executed screenplay is not something that comes regularly nowadays. And kudos to Shyam Benegal for handling all kinds of moments with that imminent directorial sensibility that nobody else can have.

Technically, the movie is brilliant, save for the green screen footage that looked immature and was improperly motion-tracked in many places. Also the editing, which was impressive in most places, looked choppy in some. Considering the motion graphics aspect, the title sequence was something that attracted my attention the most. The notebook-styled scrapbook that showed all characters' pictures ‘stuck’ onto it really amused me.

Being a fan of Shantanu Moitra’s music, this is one of his better efforts till date after Parineeta, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Eklavya, Khoya Khoya Chand, and his previous collaboration with the director, Welcome to Sajjanpur. And considering the music hasn’t been released in stores thus far it’s hard to comment on the songs which require further attention to be fully appreciated. But the one song that really floored me instantly was a track called “Sandesa” (or at least that’s what I am calling it before the official release!) which was beautifully rendered by Shreya Ghoshal. I’ll treasure that track for a long time, and await for the official soundtrack.

Leaving the soundtrack aside, let’s talk about the background score (also by Moitra). Well suffice to say, it leaves you spellbound, awestruck and makes you hum the tune throughout. In a word, brilliant!

As for performances in the movie, It would be difficult to pick out one outstanding effort, because all of them were perfectly enacted in character, be it the sex-freak sub engineer played by Ravi Kishan, or the weird wife of Armaan Ali’s twin brother Rehman Ali, called Salma (played by the eclectic and powerful Ila Arun), or the irate boss, or even Samir Dattani’s efficient performance as Arif, the mechanic working in his foster father’s shop. But the actor who surely takes the cake is Boman Irani, who has actually rocked the whole movie with his performance as both Armaan, and his twin brother Rehmaan – kudos to the acting team! And now comes the surprise package – Minissha Lamba. After a dashing debut in Yahaan and a brilliant performance in the surprise hit Shaurya, she makes a solid impression as Armaan’s bold, educated and free-spirited daughter Muskaan, who knows her rights very well.

And with such a stellar star cast, what could possibly go wrong? Basically, technical glitches apart, this movie is a perfect amalgamation of message-driven cinema and commercial entertainment driven cinema, merging into a beautiful movie that everybody will enjoy watching – not just once, but twice – even thrice!

Overall, watching this movie at the “DIFF” premiere has been an experience of a lifetime – something I’ll never forget. And watching movies at film festivals have their own subtle charm. After the charming gala premiere of Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year, which was basically the cake, I’ll call Well Done Abba the icing. This movie gives you the Welcome to Sajjanpur effect – it makes you grin widely at the end of the movie, and also makes you think hard about your rights, the good and the bad. So I recommend you wait for the worldwide movie release (sometime in 2010) and be sure to catch it, you won’t regret a second!

REVIEWER’S TIP: Going into the theatres expecting your regular Bollywood comedy and loads of slapstick, mindless entertainment value will be the biggest mistake of your life. Many critics did that for the recently officially released Rocket Singh and failed to understand the movie as a whole, and a similar disappointment was seen after Welcome to Sajjanpur. So, as a warning, please expect something different and meaningful alongside entertainment before entering cinema.

Opinion Polls:
  • Has the movie "Kites", lived up to your expectations?
  • What do you think about the music of "Kites" by Rajesh Roshan?

  • "Quiero volar Con ustedes esta noche déjame gozar este momento"

    "Kites in the sky, soaring together Lover’s Forever Forever is a lie…"

    On Sunday May 16th 2010, the world premiere of Kites was held at a gala red carpet function at the AMC Theater in Times Square, New York City. Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Anurag Basu, Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan walked down the red carpet to much fanfare and adoration (with Hrithik getting the loudest applause). Once inside the theater, each one was introduced and walked to the front of the auditorium to introduce the film. Barbara Mori hoped that everyone would like the film. Rakesh Roshan proclaimed it an experiment that he hoped would succeed and asked for the audience’s blessings. Hrithik Roshan conveyed that he had poured his all into the two years that it has taken to get this film completed and out for the world to see.

    The hype is certainly there, but the question remains, will “Kites” which is a dramatic departure from the usual Roshan FilmKraft Bollywood masala film, live up to audience’s expectations? Adding to expectations is the fact that this is Hrithik’s first appearance on the silver screen in two years.

    For Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan, “Kites” is an interesting gamble as it’s a film that features a Mexican lead actress, is filmed with a lot of English and Spanish dialogue, is a FilmKraft production that has a director known for thinking outside the masala box (Anurag Basu), has a unique English version called, “Kites – The Remix” (directed by “Rush Hour” director Brett Ratner who cut the film down to ninety minutes and added a more westernized soundtrack), and is set/filmed entirely in/around Las Vegas and the Santa Fe area.

    So on that Sunday evening, the lights dimmed, and the film’s first reel started playing…as the audience went into a cinematic trance….

    "Holds the twine in his hands What has destiny planned Will the heart understand Kites in the sky Soaring together lovers forever Forever is a lie.."

    The lyrics, “Lovers forever…. forever is a lie”, is a very telling statement about a film like “Kites” that is part romantic film, part chase/revenge film, and part mystery film. Director Anurag Basu’s screenplay (also co-written by Robin Bhatt, Akarsh Khanna, and Rakesh Roshan) is fairly straightforward and avoids the typical Bollywood masala situations. You won’t find clichéd storytelling (though the overall plot of the film is one that has been seen before in various Hollywood and Bollywood films in terms of lovers on the run), the screenplay’s strength is in how the characters J (Hrithik Roshan) and Linda/Natasha (Barbara Mori) are brought together in a clever and interesting way. From there it provides sufficient twists ‘n’ turns on the journey of these two lovers who come from totally different places. J is the scam artist who always misses the get rich quick boat due to bad luck, and Natasha is desperately trying to make some easy money in order to support her poor family back in Mexico. How these two meet, and are torn apart forms the crux of the film. The ending, which I won’t give away here, is one that is inevitable and a break from the Bollywood norm.

    The dialogues deserve special mention, as it is always kept natural and does not at any point seem overly dramatic. The balancing between Hindi, English and Spanish could have been a disaster, but is handled well. It’s a credit to the screenplay that the love between Hrithik and Barbara is set up in a few very pivotal scenes that rely on actions other than dialogues to convey emotions of a burgeoning love (simmering glances, shadows against the wall). Humor comes out in the exchanges between the two star crossed lovers and it never seems forced.

    Cinematography by Ayananka Bose is beautifully creative. The depravity of Las Vegas and scenic wonder of Santa Fe is captured perfectly by his lens. Of particular beauty are the scenes that take place in the rain, which holds a symbolic theme throughout the film and appears at critical points during the movie.

    The stunts in the film are high caliber and also are choreographed realistically. You won’t find any super kung fu kicks or mind bogglingly gravity defying stunts. Rather, you’ll find that the action blends in organically with the story, and emphasizes the inherent threat of death for J (Hrithik) and Natasha (Barbara).

    "Este amor Me está matando Lo siento cómo no tocarlo"

    Let’s be honest here, the film would not have worked had the actress not been able to interact naturally with Hrithik Roshan in the film. This could easily have degenerated into the kind of cheesy campfest that we have seen when non-Indian actors appear in Bollywood movies looking like fish out of water, but thankfully that never happens here. Barbara Mori not only emotes a charismatic performance, but also is able to hold her own against Hrithik’s formidable acting assault. All this is accomplished with her speaking mainly in Spanish throughout the film. Indian actresses should take note from Mori’s very strong and adept performance, as she shows more fire (pun intended) than most of them do in their typical portrayals.

    As for Hrithik, what can one say that hasn’t been said already? If there is any other actor that rivals the kind of excitement that Amir Khan generates, then that is Hrithik Roshan. He brings a fragile humanity to his character of J. He’s no superman, or even a great guy. In fact he is simply after what we all dream about…money. Hrithik portrays his character as the emotionally fragile everyman caught up in a love that is destined to be doomed. For those that are interested there is a dance scene set to the song, “Fire” at the beginning of the film where he brings down the house. After all what would a Hrithik film be like if he didn’t showcase his killer dance moves? This scene is probably the most Bollywood stylized scene in the film, and thankfully appears towards the beginning so that it doesn’t disrupt the narrative flow later on.

    Luckily the actors around them ably support the lead pair. Kabir Bedi is sinisterly evil as the casino owner whose daughter Gina (Kangana Ranaut in a wisp of a role that results in a scant few minutes of screen time) and crazed son Tony (Nicholas Brown in a revenge fueled performance that never goes over the top, and keeps the character dangerously believable throughout the film) are the kind of people that shouldn’t be messed with. Anand Tiwari as J’s best friend Robin has an excellent bait and switch scene that totally surprises the viewer. Finally Yuri Suri as Jamaal shines in a few scenes that convey the humanity between strangers.

    Rajesh Roshan’s music is kept mostly in the background and the tracks “Dil Kyun Yeh Mera” and “Tum Bhi Ho Wahi” are potent in conveying emotions at crucial moments during the film. There is no awkward break into song and dance (thankfully) that would destroy the emotional impact of a film that travels along a dark emotional path like “Kites” does.

    "Kites in the sky Lovers Forever… Forever is a lie.."

    All in all “Kites” is a film that shows the audience the clash between destiny and the fact that love simply does not always conquer all, especially forbidden love. Anurag Basu presents the audience with a film that is stylishly directed amidst a cacophony of emotion. Hrithik and Barbara’s chemistry creates cinematic magic within each frame and you will truly believe that they are in love. The screenplay provides just the right amount of surprises to keep the story fresh. The actors are each showcased in the right manner. The lack of the typical overly dramatic overdrawn scenes of emotion that are the staple of the usual Bollywood fare is a welcome change from the norm.

    The only downside to the film is the slightly predictable ending that might turn off Bollywood fans who are used to seeing the words happily ever after riding into the sunset. Yet, overall, Basu and the Roshan’s have provided us with an honest, intriguing and entertaining ride that is worth opening your mind to.

    The danger with a film like this is that in an effort to balance between Bollywood and Hollywood, it might leave fans of each unsatisfied. “Kites” is certainly an interesting and commendable “experiment” (as Rakesh Roshan describes it) worth watching. Directed with style and acted with panache, it’s the kind of film that will make your pulse race at all the right moments and for all the right reasons. Give it a chance…you won’t be disappointed as long as you don’t expect an instant Bollywood dishum dishum classic. Rather ”Kites” works best on a low key personal level….

    I never could formulate the overall expectations potential viewers could ever have for Badmaa$h Company. The trailers were decent but the music was unimpressive and the promotion was nothing extraordinary to talk about. And yet, this film still turns out to be an opportunity for various reasons and for specific people:

    – for actor-turned-director Parmeet Sethi, who has also written the script in six days flat (?) to make a mark in his newfound interest;

    – for Yash Raj, after the recurring box-office debacles of Dil Bole Hadippa! ,Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year and more recently Pyaar Impossible;

    – for one-film-old Anushka Sharma who’s trying something different from her first movie (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, also with the Yash Raj banner) where she played a simple and sweet Punjabi girl, as compared to now – a sizzling aspiring model;

    – for Shahid Kapoor, for whom ever since Kaminey it’s been raining flops and last but not the least for Vir Das who after the almost unknown debut as lead in the Vikram Bhatt produced Mumbai Salsa, never managed to make it big, except for a few small roles in movies like the more recent Love Aaj Kal.

    So, does the movie succeed in fulfilling the audience’s expectations (if any)? Does Shahid finally get to deliver? Does Parmeet strike gold? Does Anushka impress? Read on to know more.

    Badmaash Company is a story of four friends – Karan Kapoor (Shahid Kapoor), Zing (Meiyang Chang), Chandu (Vir Das) and Bulbul Singh (Anushka Sharma) who end up doing a few odd jobs to fulfill their short-term goals. Karan gets an idea that strikes gold – he, along with his friends, ends up doing all the wrong things in a very cautious, well-planned structure, and their ‘business’ – Friends & Co. – becomes an instant hit. Unfortunately the sole thing that brought them together is now tearing them and their lives apart – the insatiable lust for money.

    And we know that there are so many movies that have the same underlying theme so why watch this? It’s for one simple reason – a strong script with a very strong execution by the writer. Kudos to Sethi who makes things believable and relatable! You have this varied assortment of characters – simple and sweet Karan with a sharp brain and wit; bold and brash but good-at-heart Bulbul Singh who wants to be a model; alcoholic Zing who wants to drink all day with no other ambition in life; and a horny Chandu, who just wants to bird-watch. And the plus point of having these characters is the detail that goes into their development, which will gel well with a lot of viewers. Parmeet Sethi’s script doesn’t even look like it’s finished in six days due to the extreme detailing in quite a few scenes that look like it’s been really well-visualized in it’s pre-production stages. Brownie points for them.

    And it’s not just the script and screenplay that Sethi is efficient in – it’s the dialogues too! Penned by himself, they are witty and crack you up whenever they’re meant to. At times you do notice that the dialogues tilt towards becoming redundant and predictable, but those are few and far between. The most memorable scene in the movie is when Vir Das ends up looking at Anushka Sharma’s assets instead of her face while conversing to her and her immediate reaction is by covering them with a blanket and replying point-blank, “Nahin, yeh baat nahin karte!” which is hilarious! You’ll find many more of those cheeky intelligent one-liners in the movie.

    Moving on towards the technical aspects, we have excellent and smooth camerawork and some really awesome cinematography by Sanjay Kapoor. What complements these aspects is the watertight editing by Ritesh Soni, which gives the movie a slick style, what with match cuts (a split screen showing an action from two different angles) and multiple screens acting as ellipses of a completely different kind. Color correction where it’s needed gives the film the gloss it requires.

    Sync sound has been really well handled by sound engineers Dwarak Warrier and Debashish Mishra. As I stated in my music review of the film, the songs composed by Pritam don’t really leave any impact audibly, but when played along with snazzy visuals and excellent editing and color-correction, you find yourself humming to the tunes. This is what happens to situational songs, if placed rightly and written well into the plot. The most well-executed songs of the lot have to be Ayaashi, Chaska and the title track which appears right at the end credits. Jingle Jingle is fun to see but doesn’t really hold onto your mind as you leave the cinema halls. Fakira is decently shot and fits in really well with the situation.

    Before I review the performance of each pivotal character, I’d like to say that each actor in this movie has delivered power-packed performances, which become a huge trump card for the movie. Shahid Kapoor hits the nail on the head yet again. Watch out for his discovery of a pregnant Anushka, and his confrontation with her on her discovery of his green card secret. Other scenes where he’s done really well have to be the ones with Anupam Kher – emotionally powerful ones. Anushka is yet another revelation. Rather than going into safe mode by being stereotyped as the simple girl, she’s gone ahead and done something tangentially different than her debut performance in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi almost two years ago. Her bold and casual act takes you by surprise and impresses one and all- she is confidence personified.

    Vir Das is really good. He will go places if he makes the right choices. Same with Indian Idol 3 finalist Meiyang Chang who has given a spellbinding performance. Anupam Kher is as usual, very good at what he does, and his scenes with Shahid are at the top of your must-watch list. The scene of his receipt of 25 years of distinguished service may be a bit clichéd but is surely watchable for his emotions. Kiran Juneja Sippy hardly has any meaty dialogues but enacts whatever she gets with poise. Pawan Malhotra is really cool in his comic scenes. Watch out for when he calls the receptionist ‘Soojan’ who later, annoyed for having pronounced her name wrong, tells him it’s ‘Susan’ and not ‘Soojan’!

    Despite having a truckload of positives the movie has some negatives as well, some of which have already been stated above. The biggest negative has to be it’s uneven pace, which would be fine if the movie was on the lines of Rocket Singh. Unfortunately, for a movie being promoted as a crime caper with conmen you expect this to be fast-paced but there are gradual unfolding of scenes and some slight overindulgence of Parmeet Sethi in his writing – too much fine detail provided when it could have been overlooked. Probably Shahid Kapoor’s narration wasn’t required either as voice-overs sometimes spoil the impact of the movie but at least it’s been intelligently placed to fit into the movie.

    Despite the dragging pace the movie ends up providing us with ample doses of entertainment value, what with a really well-written script, supported by excellent performances by the cast and rock-solid production values by the makers of the film! And the best part about the movie is despite carrying the tag of the ‘fun, fresh film that wants to entertain us’, the movie never ends up insulting your intelligence, something Parmeet Sethi should be applauded of. This one’s a must-watch, and a must-support too.

    And finally, just like I do for all debutant directors, I, on behalf of the whole PlanetBollywood team, would like to welcome Parmeet Sethi to his newfound profession in Bollywood, and wish that him all the success!
