Nokia Launches Cheapest(?) 3G Phone, Partners with Airtel for Free Internet

Nokia has launched Nokia 2730, at a price of Rs. 4,499/ making it probably the cheapest 3G phone in India. Nokia 2730 is integrated with OVI suite of products and Nokia has embedded Nokia Life Tools service in the mobile as well.
The company has partnered with Airtel, enabling Airtel subscribers to post pictures for free for the first 2 months and 100MB of free data transfer (valid for 3 months) [more details at Airtel site]Nokia 2730 Price and Specification

Nokia 2730 Specification

  • 2-inch QVGA display
  • 30 MB internal dynamic memory
  • microSD memory card slot with hot swap, max. 2 GB
  • Nokia maps
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 4x digital zoom – more details
What’s interesting about the combo is coming together of device and operator, in order to target the price sensitive Indian mobile users.
So what if mobile users aren’t browsing (well, there are only 2 Million Serious Mobile Internet Users in India) – a cheap phone combined with cheaper (rather free) data plan makes it an affordable solution; and if you recall the SMS growth, the most important part was when operators made it free (late 90s) and got people addicted to it.
Maybe, mobile Internet has a chance.
